Tahiti, Solomon in must win situation

June 13, 2008

Second placed Tahiti and crowd favourites Solomon Islands will go head to head in the feature match of the 2008 OFC FUTSAL Championships tonight.

Both teams need to win to remain in contention for the lone Oceania spot in the World Cup and pressure current leader Vanuatu, which only has one match remaining.

Tahiti is the only team that is undefeated to date and a win over Solomon Islands tonight and another against Vanuatu will send the French colony to the World Cup in Brazil.

The Solomon Islands, currently on third spot with nine points, needs to beat Tahiti and Tuvalu by huge margins to go through.

The Tahitian camp is confident of handing Solomon Islands its second loss.

Speaking through an English interpreter, coach Rani Bea said his side’s three consecutive wins have boosted its chances.

“We will play two big games against Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. We will be taking a game at a time and are confident of winning both the matches and topping the qualifiers” he added.

Solomon Islands official Dickson Kadau said the loss to Vanuatu has really put pressure on them to perform and they would be out to register wins in the remaining two matches to remain in the hunt for the top spot.

“We will not be underestimating Tahiti as they are a good side and are undefeated so far.

“We failed to click against Vanuatu last night but with the return of our key player Jack Wetney from suspension tonight, we are expecting our scoring department to improve.

“It will be a big game for us and we are calling on all our supporters to come forward and rally behind the boys” he said.

The Tahiti v Solomons match kicks off at 6pm at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.
