The delight of Dural Baptist

DEAR EDITOR - The young Futsal team of the Solomon Islands is an excellent example of partnering together to achieve an otherwise impossible goal.

The result has only been made possible because of being able to use a vast number of resources.

First the players in the Solomons are extremely gifted athletes, gifted by God with speed, skill and great coordination.

Secondly, those players have worked hard with dedicated coaching staff who have shaped their technique and tactical development.

Third the people of Dural Sport and Leisure Centre, a ministry of Dural Baptist Church, have nurtured and encouraged coaches and athletes with a wide range of resources, financial and sports related.

Fourth the support of AusAid’s Community Sector Program has underwritten the expansion of Futsal to the provinces.

Finally, the people and communities of the Solomon Islands, both within the Solomons and in places the teams have visited, have provided wonderful support. The result is an achievement that could never have been achieved without all playing their part”

The results in the Oceania World Cup Qualifiers from such a young team validate the grassroots Futsal program, but the people of the Solomon Islands should not to expect too much from the team in the World Cup.

We are building a strong team for a real bid in the World Cup in four years time. The journey to Brazil in September is likely to see the team suffer some big losses because as such a lowly ranked team they will be pooled against the very best But if we face the future together in the same way we have partnered in producing results over the past seven years, so much more will be achieved”.

Dural Sport & Leisure Centre’s elite Futsal program is called SALT (Sport & Leadership Training), and amongst the expanding range of initiatives the SALT program is undertaking in the Solomon’s.
