Futsal's coming home...

By David Pringle

It'S coming home, it's coming home, it's coming, futsal's coming home...

Not everyone will be familiar with the sport, but from next season Enfield will be home to one of the best futsal sides in the country.

Having previously played under the guise of Northaw, next season Futsal Club Enfield will be returning to the borough and have changed their name to reflect the move.

When higher hall charges forced the team to move out of Enfield, they received help from Northaw Football Club, and spent their first season in the FA National Leagues under the name FS Northaw.

But now the club will be linking up with Enfield Futsal League to bring the sport back to the borough, with games being played at Enfield College and Albany School.

Club secretary Rob Brassett said: "This (the move) is something we have wanted to do for some time.

"We are very grateful to Northaw Football Club for assisting us when it was needed.

"The move brings National League Futsal to the borough at an exciting time, after the side recently beat two of the top teams in the country -White Bear and Vaughans.

"It was felt to assist the side in it progression it should take on the name of Enfield, the borough it came from.

"The move will also assist the club with advertising and sponsorship and increasing its profile."

Futsal is an indoor version of normal football, but unlike five-a-side football it is played using lines rather than board, from which players can rebound the ball, plus the ball is smaller and less bouncy than in normal football.

Last season FS Northaw narrowly missed out on an automatic place in the national finals, and are now hoping for a wild card if they are to play in the end-of-season finale.

They played their final games as FS Northaw in the qualifying stages of the FA National Cup.

The first, against Manuden, was a close-fought affair with the Essex side scoring two late goals to win 6-5 and knock Northaw out of the competition.

Aaron Cato (2), Stuart Gore, Kirt Osborn and Justin Dickinson got the Northaw goals.

Despite the defeat they still played their second match against another Essex side, Lyric, winning 19-0.

Cato netted six of the goals with Hatim Mosey scoring a hat-trick.
