FORMER GUATEMALAN FUTSAL STRIKER SCORES GAMEWINNER FOR COLUMBUS CREW OVER THE LOS ANGELES GALAXY IN 2002 U.S. OPEN CUP FINAL
Forward Freddy Garcia notched the game-winning goal in the Columbus Crew's 1-0 victory over the defending champion Los Angeles Galaxy in the 2002 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final at Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio on Oct. 24. Garcia, who was a member of the Guatemalan Futsal National Team at the 2000 FIFA World Championship, score the game's only goal in the 30th minute of the first half. The win gives the first domestic championship in the Crew's seven-year history and also earned them the final U.S. Soccer berth for the 2003 CONCACAF Champions Cup.
