Gov’t committed to sports: Tora

By EDDIE OSIFELO

MINISTER of Home Affairs, James Tora says the government is committed to seeing new changes taking place within the sporting fraternity.

He made the assurance after the national Kurukuru futsal and Bilikiki beach soccer teams have qualified to take part in the World Cup this year.

The Kurukuru will take part in the FIFA Futsal World Cup in Brazil in September. Bilikiki will represent OFC for the third time in France next month.

Speaking at a colourful ceremony to thank both teams yesterday at Lawson Tama, Tora said the Government aims to build a national stadium in Honiara and the provinces.

He said this is to enhance Solomon Islanders to become good sports men and women.
“The drive to build a national sporting stadium is on even if we weren’t given the rights to host the 2015 Pacific Games,” Tora said.

“Provincial sports facilities, including provincial sports secretaries as well as national sports secretaries are being considered to be taken care of by my Ministry.

“This will evidently see much improvement in terms of better facilities and personnel,” he said.

Also Tora joined the rest of the sporting family to thank the national representatives in Futsal and Beach Soccer for the gracious achievements they have waged themselves in during their recent international outings.

“As your minister responsible for sports, I’m lost for words in having to acknowledge the efforts of all of you,” he said.

“This include your officials who have majestically compassed your way through rough and tough times and are able to land you all on the shores of Brazil and Paris for that prestigious sporting event – the World Cup,” Tora said.
