Annapolis CapitalSeverna Park team wins futsal championshipJuly 18, 2008 The DCFA Flamengo, a 12-and-under girls futsal team from Severna Park, captured a national title last weekend at the the 23rd U.S. Futsal National Championship held at the Baltimore Convention Center. The Flamengo defeated the reigning Eastern Regional champs, Explosion Fire, 2-1 in Sunday's title game.
The Flamengo, who finished second to the Fire in Boston during regionals in March, won five straight matches to win the first national title for Denison Cabral's futsal academy. DCFA, which is based in Severna Park's Sportsplex, advanced two teams to national title matches and five teams to the semifinals. Flamengo was the only team to take gold.
The team got first-half goals from Jennifer Reilly of Pasadena and Anna Marie Mellis of Millersville, then used strong play from defenders Delia Rapasky (Annapolis) and Madeline Ostraski (Annapolis) and clutch saves from goalie Bridget Bielski (Severna Park) to secure the win.
The Flamengo defeated teams from Boise, Idaho and California on the way to the title. During the five-game stretch, the team received goals from Taylor Green (Severna Park), Jenna Clark (Kent Island), Kourtney McLain (Pasadena) and assists from Nicole Gernert (Pasadena) and Lizzy Lombardo (Crofton).
