FOR the first time in Malaysia, RM50,000 will be awarded to the champions of a futsal tournament.
The 18-leg HTO Futsal League was launched at the HTO Futsal Court in Subang Jaya yesterday, a tournament which awards RM57,000 per leg.
The first leg will begin this Saturday and will feature 64 professional and semi-pro teams.
The 10 minute per half tournament sanctioned by the FA of Malaysia, is a oneday event.
The prize breakdown is RM50,000 to the champion, RM5,000 to the second place and RM1,000 each for the third and fourth place finishers.
Champions of each leg will will then play in the champions league final to be held sometime in June next year where the cash prize has yet to be determined.
HTO Futsal vice president Mohd Khairul Anam Ilyas (above) said: “With most of the tournaments in the country opened for amatuers, this would mostly cater for the professional outfit.
“With the intention of raising the standard of the game, we also hope that the tournament will be a pool for the national selectors to identify the next batch of players to represent Malaysia,” he added.
With the event worth more than RM1 million the organisers have also promised tight security during matchdays as things might get out of control.
“We have already informed the local council and even alerted the police to be on stand if things get unruly,” said Khairul.
