Kawana kicks a goal with futsal

It was yet another victory for Kawana Waters State College’s under 13 futsal team at the Queensland and Northern New South Wales School Futsal Titles last week.

Earlier this year they were also crowned the South-east Queensland champions.

This team is unstoppable.

Kawana Waters State College physical education and football teacher Dustin Slypen said it was the biggest school futsal competition in Australia and he was very proud of his team.

“The boys and I were ecstatic, they had no idea they were going to win,” he said.

The tournament ran over one full day during which the under 13s played a massive eight games.

They played five group games followed by three finals and only lost one game on the day.

“They were buggered by the end of it,” Mr Slypen said.

“But we had a big squad which was good, and they were all outstanding. There was not a weak player on the team”

The team’s star player Jayden Liddicoat was nursing a back injury on the day but they still managed to win with Liddicoat playing half of each game.

Slypen said Billy Knepsheld and Kayden Oakes stepped up and were outstanding all day.

The final stages of the competition were intense but the boys gave it their best, beating Centenary State High School 8–1 in their semi-final.

They then stormed into the grand final against St Mary’s College and after the full time buzzer sounded, celebrated an 8–2 victory.

The next step for the under 13s is the Australasian Championships in November, which run for five full days on the Gold Coast.

Slypen said the boys were excited about winning but even more excited to qualify for the Australasian competition.

“I think they were just thinking about the five days off school,” Slypen joked.

“I have actually had four or five teachers already put their hand up to come down.”

The team have only come together this year most of the boys have been playing representative football on the Sunshine Coast for a while, so some already knew each other.

Kawana Waters State College is a Football School of Excellence where students interested in the sport can study it as part of their curriculum during school time.

“We have kids that travel a long way to go to our school,” Mr Slypen said.

“Last year we won the open boys and now we have won again, the school is really starting to develop a nice list of credentials.”
