INTERNATIONAL NEWS CONDOLENCES TO THE VICTIMS AND THEIR FAMILIES OF THE BALI BOMBING I first must start and offer our condolences to the victims and their families of the Bali bombing. Bali is a popular location for end of season trips for Australian soccer, rugby and aussie rules teams at this time of year and I’ve heard numerous stories about the team that was going there the next day or next week after the bombing . By coincidence I was heading to Jakarta last Wednesday for the Asian Futsal Titles, but called off the trip on the advice of the Australian government. I was looking forward to meeting Futsal people from all countries, especially some from Indonesia who write to me and I hope I get to meet them at a later date.
As part of national grieving day, we had a minutes silence at all Sunday competitions last weekend. It’s a shame when sport, which creates brotherhood and friendship between all races, has to suffer because of such bloody minded madness.

ENGLAND TOUR HAS LEFT Brian Keightley left with his party of 18( one under 19 boys and one under 19 girls team) for the UK and France on Saturday 19th October. Landing in some of the worst winds and storms in ten years, the players have spent more time at Futsal then soccer . Training with the Norwich coaches has started and on Wednesday night we are having our regular ‘challenge’ Futsal game against the Norwich coaching staff. Norwich beat us last time so we are out for revenge. Brian has also met the English FA’s new Futsal development officer, Dermot Collins, and he is coming up from London to watch the game. On Thursday the tour leaves for Paris where the boys will play in the ISSY cup and the girls will have friendly games against local Paris sides. On return we will be posting some photos and reports from the tour on the website.
ASIAN FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIPS ON IN JAKARTA The Asian Futsal Championships are presently being played in Jakarta Indonesia with the final to be played this Wednesday night. The two semifinals are Thailand v Japan and Iran v Korea. To keep up to date with the rest of the tournament go to www.futsalplanet.com . I was going to attend this tournament on behalf of Soccer Australia but due to the occurrences in Bali , postponed the trip. My apologies to our Indonesian Futsal friends, but rest assured we are keen to build stronger links with our closest neighbours in the future.
2004 FIFA FUTSAL WORLD CUP Four countries have now nominated to host the next Futsal World Cup…..Paraguay, Bahrain , Thailand and Egypt. Mauricio tells me he is taking the Brazilian men’s team to Egypt on November 25th for a ‘ practise ’ tournament in preparation for Egypt’s bid.
NATIONAL NEWS
NATIONAL SCHOOL TITLES IN ALBURY BIG SUCCESS The national school titles were held in Albury from the 1st to the 3rd October and were a huge success. Queensland took down six buses with players from as far away as Cairns in the north and Stanthorpe in the west. With the overnight bus trip taking 19 hours from Brisbane, our players were tired on arrival but soon got into the competition. In the boys competitions we were runnersup in the 15s and in the girls were more successful winning the 12s,13s,16s and runnersup in the 15’s. I’m proud to say that Queensland , the state with the furthest to travel, entered the most teams in the tournament . We have applied to host next year’s national school titles in Toowoomba and at the moment it’s 90 % sure of going ahead. If Queensland do host it, they will run a three day interstate series followed by a two day interschool series for individual schools. A decision will be made on the location of the tournament at the National Futsal Meeting on Saturday 9th November.
ANOTHER FUTSAL PLAYER SIGNS FOR STRIKERS Andrew Kendall, one of our state coaches and teacher at St. Laurences, reports that one of his students, Mario Aparicio , has been signed for the National League Soccer team, the Brisbane Strikers. Andrew reports :
"Hi Ali. Just a bit of info for a future newsletter. Mario Aparicio has just been signed as the third keeper in the Strikers. You will remember that he toured with me in the Australian Under 12 Futsal team and has been a member of numerous Qld Futsal teams. He is currently in the QAS squad and Qld Under 16 Soccer team. He also played in the "Joeys" (Australian Under 16) team earlier this year. Not to mention that he was the goalkeeper in St Laurence's undefeated premiership team this year!!"
Well done Mario, and all the best for the future.
ASPAC MASTERS GAMES Well unfortunately this years masters were not as successful as previous ones(numbers wise) but I believe all sports had a similar problem due to the affect of the World Masters in Melbourne. The Queensland state government has already announced that the ASPAC masters will now become the PAN PACIFIC MASTERS and will rotate between San Fransisco and Gold Coast year to year. So to all our USA readers book yourself for a trip to the beautiful sunny Gold Coast , Queensland for September 2004 and play some Futsal while you are here.
NATIONAL CLUB TITLES We’ve had some people ringing re the exact location of the nationals in January. They will definitely be at Homebush and Lidcombe in Sydney as per last year. If any parents are looking for accommodation I suggest the Ibis Hotel at the Olympic Village, Homebush will be perfect.

REFEREES COURSE IN WARWICK Last Friday night I held a referees course at Warwick , two hours south-east of Brisbane and it was great to see nine people turn up. As is the story of my life at the moment, I happened to be running a referees course in Warwick the main night of the Warwick Rodeo, one of the big events on the rodeo calendar year. Not only did I miss the street parade and the rodeo, but I had to drive home to Brisbane after the course as there was no accommodation available for miles. Warwick have got the sport well and truly going and I’m hoping to see teams from the centre attending tournaments this year. I’ll be back this Thursday night to watch competition and carry out practical exams on the attendees.

HUMOUR Well last newsletter’s questions were popular. Paul Mackarzel was the first to write in, at 1.00 am in the morning with answers, followed by Scott Kitson of NSW Futsal at 1.40 am. I thought I stayed up late sending it at 11.30 pm, however Damian Pilat was first in with the correct answers. This will also be the last Everton question.
Last weeks answers:
1. Of the two big Merseyside soccer teams, Liverpool and Everton, who has won the most first division/ premier league titles ?
LIVERPOOL (18 TITLES) beats EVERTON ( 9 TITLES)
2. The rules of Futsal were written in Uraguay in 1931 by Jules Ceriani. What major event is credited with being a catalyst in this occurring ? Uruguay winning the soccer world cup at home, promoted "soccer madness" in the country. Because there was a lack of free field space, Jules turned to using basketball courts as it was the best space available ’
The badge on the Brazilian national Futsal jersey has more stars above it than the badge on Brazil Soccer’s jersey…..why ?
Because each star represents a world cup victory and Brazil have won more Futsal world cups than Football world cups.
( correction on this answer however….since the soccer team won the world cup two months ago, they now have five stars each. Our reliable source Mauricio confirmed after Queensland men’s player DAMIAN PILAT picked up. Apologies. )
4. How many Futsal World Cups has FIFA run, what years and where ?
1989 - Netherlands
1992 - Honk Kong
1996 - Spain
2000 - Guatemala
JOKE ONE I read this on the football.rivals soccer site a few weeks ago and thought it was worth reproducing. Coupled with Trevor Brooking’s comment ‘Renauldo’s toepoke goal was a miskick ‘, during the wolrd cup, perhaps England still has a while to go in finesse and its commentators in modern tactics in the game.
As an old-school centre-back, former England international and sometime Radio Five Live analyst Terry Butcher is a firm believer in putting ‘the reducer’ on opponents with a good early kicking. Yet, bearing in mind recent events around Leeds’ glamorous Majestyk nightspot, was it entirely wise for him to hail a Lee Bowyer foul in the Portugal friendly with the words: "That’s what I like about Bowyer - he goes around whacking people"?
(Taken from the excellent www.football.rivals website)
JOKE TWO
In All sports there have been growing problems with team mascots getting to involved in the games. This also from football.rivals site.
Not since Alan Ball failed to get his picture adorning the walls of Bloomfield Road has Blackpool been in the midsts of such controversy. And it all surrounds the club mascot BLOOMFIELD BEAR after Jason Price missed a penalty for visiting Tranmere.
Price's effort was well saved by Phil Barnes. But Price and manager Ray Mathias cried foul, claiming the antics of the mascot behind the goal put the player off. Mathias said: "It was way out of order. He was jumping about trying to distract Jason".
JOKE THREE
ROMEO BECKHAMS FIRST GAME Well young Romeo Beckham, son of Posh Spice and the England soccer captain has only just been born, but there are already jokes being written about him. Thanks to Fred Boylan from Canada Futsal for this one. Young Romeo is picked for his first football game for the school and says to his famous father.... Dad, what should I do, I don't want to be just like you, so what position should I play, what number should I wear? Becks replies…… Romeo, Romeo, wear four out there Romeo
THAT’S ALL FOLKS…..SEE YOU NEXT WEEK
