5th European Universities Futsal Championships

5th European Universities Futsal Championships
We provide you with the final report from Wroclaw, regarding the 5th EUC champs which ended with the Malaga University victory over the Ukrainian side Dnipropetrovsk Finance Academy.

Report by our friend Tom Aftanski, former head coach of the Polish National team

The 5th European Universities Futsal Championship was a great event for all futsal fans in Poland. 16 teams representing 13 countries showed different level of futsal development in their country academies. Knowledge of tactics and basic rules were also different, with the level of mental engagement beeing very high: there were few matches lost without fighting.

The final winner of the competition was the University of Malaga, the Spanish academy had no problems in this tournament. In every game they proved that there was no chance for other teams to compete. Great goalkeepers, magnificent team spirit, technique skills and tactic development on a higher level. Their best player - Ignacio Cisneros González was a perfect captain. He was not only best scorer of his team but a real director as well. It is also important that Spanish players received a fair-play award as they didn’t receive any suspension. Can you imagine? 6 games without even one yellow card. Big respect for them. Summary: it was a run for the second place.

Dnipropetrowsk State Financial Academy from Ukraine took this place without any surprise. Last year winner had problems with the only goalkeeper’s injury and most of games played with flying goalkeeper. Luckily for them he was able to play in semi final game against University of Montenegro. Players from Balkans made a great impression in this tournament and they were really close to the final. Draw in semi final and defeat in penalties forced them to the bronze final. Ukrainians were very satisfied with this result but they didn’t have any chances in the title final, above all because they lost their captain and most valuable player, Vitaliy Solomka, who was suspended.

University of Montenegro and Academy of Health Education from Lodz (Poland) played a great game for bronze medal. Attack vs attack, individual play in offense and zonal defense plus incredible effectiveness from Polish player Daniel Krawczyk who scored 5 goals and gave two assists in this game! A brilliant futsal show in Wroclaw which ended with a 7-4 score for home team.

In each tournament there are some individuals which make the competition more attractive. It is worth to write that some players showed their skills and that in short time they may be strong futsal players in their countries. This competition was also some kind of “market” for polish futsal 1st division clubs. Maybe we will see in next season few of those players in Poland. They would increase the level of polish league for sure.

I think that in the future we will hear some of those names on the international stage, like Hrvoje Penava and Vlatko Brnic from Croatia, Marcin Stanislawski, Daniel Krawczyk and Mariusz Milewski from Poland, Milovan Draskovic and Zoran Barovic from Montenegro, Ignacio Cisneros González from Spain, Andriy Zasenko, Valentyn Sopilnyak and Maksym Ivonko from Ukraine.
