Roubaix lead three-way race

Monday 11 August 2008

Three teams still have hopes of progress from UEFA Futsal Cup Preliminary round Group A with one set of games remaining while FC Nadin Sofia made a winning start to their campaign today.

Roubaix edge ahead
Politechnik Yerevan led the way in Group A after Sunday's openers, having beaten Iceland's Vídir Gardi 4-3 while French hosts Roubaix Futsal needed three late goals to hold Cypriot champions FC Parnassos 4-4. However, it is Roubaix who are now at the summit thanks to a 9-2 defeat of Vídir, which was followed by Parnassos gaining a 9-4 win against Politechnik in a game that was 3-3 at half-time. Roubaix are ahead of Parnassos on goal difference, with Politechnik a point behind ahead of Wednesday's games, which will decide who takes the one Main round place on offer. Parnassos know they must beat eliminated Vídir in the first game and hope for the other result to go their way, while Politechnik need to defeat Roubaix and hope that the first-ever Icelandic entrants end their debut campaign by avoiding a loss.

Nadin win thriller
Nadin are staging the three-team Group C in Bulgaria and are top thanks to a narrow 10-8 win against another side making their European bow, Ipswich Wolves. The English side will aim to beat MFK Elita Tetovo by a scoreline of better than 2-0 on Tuesday to keep their hopes alive ahead of the Wednesday decider between Nadin and the Macedonian contenders.

Tuesday decider
Among other Tuesday games, Group B hosts 1. Futsal Club Graz must defeat FK Nikars Riga to pip their opponents to the Main round, and Group F gets underway in Germany with hosts UFC Münster up against Dutch side Carillon Boys Beverwijk after MNK Orlic Sarajevo take on FC Betoon Tallinn. Group D also concludes, although Lithuanian team FK Nautara Kaunas have already clinched first place. The full list of Preliminary and Main round groups can been seen here.
