Thais retain AFF Futsal title

BANGKOK: AFC Futsal Championship 2008 runners-up Thailand continued their domination of ASEAN futsal after winning the AFF Futsal Championship for the sixth straight time by defeating Indonesia 5-1 in the final on Sunday.

Supported by thousands of eager fans at the Nimbutr Stadium, the Thais took the lead through Suphahut Thuenklang in the sixth minute before the same player cemented the advantage as the break approached.

Thuenklang, who was later named as the MVP of the tournament, scored his third goal in the 27th minute to make it 3-0 and although Deny Handoyo scored in the 35th minute to inject some hope into the Indonesian campaign the Thais were on top again when Jirawat Sornwichian found the net.

Kritsada Wongkaeo rounded off the Thai tally with their fifth goal towards the end.

Meanwhile, Malaysia finished third after defeating Brunei 8-1.

The Malaysians had taken a 5-0 lead at the break, thanks to goals from Ahmad Hanif Karnim (4, 5), N. Saravanan (6), Safar Mohamad (10) and Muhammad Fadhil Yusof (20).

Brunei scored twice in the 22nd and 35th minutes but it was not enough for them to stage a revival as the Malaysians struck through Hanif (23) and Fadhil (38, 39) for the big win.
