Anna Livia Cup Futsal Finals underway

Thursday, 04 September 2008

Last weekend saw the first of the series of Anna Livia Futsal Cup finals taking place at St. Michael’s Hall, Inchicore and St. Kevin’s Hall, Crumlin. The Anna Livia Cup is a Futsal competition for boys and girls who participate in the FAI Inner City Futsal Programme every summer. The programme has been running successfully for six years now with the competition now in its third year.

From an initial entry of 44 teams in 2006, there are now almost 200 teams participating in the competition which features boys and girls U12 and U14 divisions.

The Anna Livia Cup competition concept was devised by the FAI in conjunction with Dublin City Council and has now also incorporated teams from the other Dublin Local Authorities of Fingal, South Dublin and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Councils.

On Saturday 30th August at Inchicore, the U12 girls deciders saw Sheriff St. crowned as the metropolitan champions when they edged out a gallant St. Catherine’s team 1-0 in a very close run game. The boys U12 championship in Crumlin on Sunday 31st was won by a top class Finglas side who overcame a close challenge from Greek Street on penalties.

The showpiece event of this summer’s Inner City Futsal programme will take place on Sunday 7th September at the National Basketball Arena when the boys and girls U14 competitions come to a conclusion. Ten boys teams and the final four girls teams will participate in the Tallaght venue with some exciting prizes on offer to the victors.

The winners of the U14 competitions will receive the impressive Anna Livia trophies but an added incentive is that they will also win the opportunity to travel to see a top Premiership game in the coming weeks! As a bonus to the great prizes on offer, every child who participated in the Anna Livia Cup will also be entered into a free draw for a fantastic trip to Barcelona to visit the famous Camp Nou stadium and see the Catalan giants in action in a top Spanish league match.

All in all, it promises to be an exciting couple of weekends.
Everyone is welcome to attend free of charge and cheer on the teams. First Kick Off is 10.30 with the finals taking place around 3.30pm.
