Futsal FAIMarvellous Marrowbone and Brilliant Ballymun clinch Anna Livia titles!Tuesday, 09 September 2008It’s been hailed as the best Anna Livia competition so far and the level of play produced yesterday in the boys and girls under 14 finals at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght was clear evidence of that!
The Anna Livia Cup is a competition devised by the FAI and Dublin City Council and evolved from the Inner City Futsal programme which now stretches across all the greater Dublin local authority areas. Almost 2000 children have participated in the programme during this summer with almost 200 teams competing in the unique Futsal competition.
In a closely run boys tournament, Marrowbone lane secured the title with a 4-1 victory over a strong Inchicore team. The slick incisive passing of the ’Lane was just too much for a gallant Inchicore team. The display of Futsal skills from Michael Malone and Willo McDonald were instrumental for a ‘Lane side who deservedly took the title. Cherry Orchard claimed the bronze medal position with a hard fought 5-2 win over East wall.
The girls competition final produced an amazing 6-0 scoreline as a brilliant Ballymun side went into overdrive against last years champions, Donore avenue. Donore had surprised many people with their clever play and picked teams off with ease on their way to the final. However, a powerful display by the Ballymun girls saw them clinch the cup for the first time from last year’s winners. Third place was won by Hardwick Street who narrowly beat Inchicore girls 1-0.
