Nathan hoping to catch the selectors' eyes

1/10/2008

THE under 16 Tasmania North Futsal team is in Victoria this week competing at the Futsal National Championship.

Tasmania North team captain, Reece High student Nathan Turale, has only played the game for two years.

The wing back and fixed defender said he enjoyed playing indoor soccer because it was faster and involved more skill than the outdoors version.

Selectors will be watching the championship closely, with the best players chosen to play for the All- star team and travel to Brazil for further training and competition.

"I'm trying to make the Australian team - I will just keep doing my best and see what happens," he said.

"I love soccer, it is the best sport in the world and hopefully I will keep doing what I'm doing and grow as a player."

Tasmania North has played two of its games at the competition so far, losing to Queensland Country 4-1 and also losing to Queensland City 10-1.

Despite the rocky start, Nathan is confident that Tasmania North has the ability to make the final.

Last year Tasmania North was unlucky to not win a game.

"Last year we didn't really know that much about the rules and basics of futsal - we were just running around and having fun," he said.

This year the team has been taught set plays that it is hoping will help it improve upon last year's performance.

Futsal is an indoor soccer competition with five players on court including the goalkeeper.

Tasmania North is one of eight teams in the under 16 division.
