Sierra Ferreira Big Fan of Futsal

By Amberly Richardson

Sierra Ferreira recently committed to play for the University of San Diego following her senior year at La Jolla Country Day. The fun and energetic Ferreira also spends a large chunk of her time playing for the elite SD Surf GU-17 White, but takes time out of her busy schedule to explain to XK San Diego Soccer News why she fell in love with Futsal and how the indoor game helped her outside:

When did you participate and what did you think of the experience?

I've been playing Futsal on and off for about four years now. I fell in love with the game my freshman year and was pretty hooked. I loved that it was different than any other soccer-related game I had ever played. I guess the most similar games would be a cross between indoor and 3-on-3. It's small and contained, so you have to use a lot of skill moves and resort to short, quick passes.

Also, the goals are much smaller, so you have to be pretty accurate to maneuver the ball around the keeper. I've had a lot of fun playing Futsal these past four years. I've met a lot of great players through the program and hope that Futsal keeps growing. It's a great way to introduce younger players to the game of soccer and help develop the skills of older players.

Do you feel that Futsal improved your game? If so, why?

It's clear to see that Futsal is a different game than soccer. However, there are a couple relate-able elements. Playing Futsal has helped me be more confident on the ball and use moves more often. I also have shots that are more accurate because I had to focus on placement in Futsal. It's a quick game and a great way to stay in shape.

About Mario Mrakovic, the brain and passion of San Diego Futsal:

Mario has pioneered a fantastic program. He has really worked hard to popularize Futsal. I have no doubt he has helped many players improve their game by participating in his clinics and tournaments. Five years ago, nobody would have even known what Futsal is. Now, every soccer player in San Diego has heard about it. He's done a great job to bring this wonderful game to the attention of San Diego soccer players.

Quote to Note:

The game is so quick and tight that there is non-stop action throughout the play. It's a fun game and great to play with friends. I've really enjoyed improving my skills on the court and surrounding myself with great players. Both times my team played in the national tournament, we took home gold. Hopefully, we can get another team together to capture the title again before college.
