TOR CHITTINANDThailand beat the United States 5-3 yesterday to keep alive their hopes of reaching the second round of the Futsal (five-a-side) World Cup in Rio de Janeiro.
Eakapong Suratsawang, Sermphan Khumthinkaew (two), Lertchai Issarasuwipakorn and Panuwat Janta were on target for Thailand in the Group B match.
Eakapong and Sermphan gave Thailand a 2-0 lead only for the US to hit back for a 2-2 draw at halftime.
Lertchai, Sermphan and Panuwat helped Thailand lead 5-2 in the second half before the Americans got a consolation late in the game.
Thailand have one win and one defeat after a 1-0 loss to Italy in their opening game. The Americans, who had lost 5-0 to Paraguay and 6-1 to Italy, suffered their third straight defeat and were eliminated.
The other two teams in the group are Italy and Portugal with two teams from each group advancing to the knock-out stages.
Thailand, who are playing in their third straight futsal World Cup, next play Paraguay tomorrow.
On Friday, defending champions Spain beat Libya 3-0 for their first win of the tournament.
In other matches, Argentina beat Egypt 4-2, Ukraine routed Guatemala 6-2 and the Czech Republic downed Uruguay 4-1.
