Thursday October 09 2008

BRASILIA, Brazil (CMC) – Japan thumped Cuba 4-1 and kicked the Caribbean side out of the FIFA Futsal World Cup on Monday.

Kotaro Inaba scored twice as the Japanese pumped in four unanswered goals in a fine comeback win after they had trailed 1-0 at half time.

Yampier Rodriguez scored for Cuba in the 15th minute but Japan rallied for the win.

Inaba scored in the 25th and 33rd minutes and sent the Cubans to their second consecutive loss.

Nobuya Osodo (23rd) and Yuki Kanarama (31st) got Japan’s other goals to sink the Cubans, who had opened the tournament with a victory over Solomon Islands before losing to Russia.

CONCACAF’s USA were also sent packing.

Leitao scored the first of his three goals in the second minute and Portugal sent the USA home with a fourth straight loss 8-1.

Sandre Naumoski (37th) scored the only goal for the Americans, who will return home having been outscored 24-5 in their four games.

The only CONCACAF team remaining in contention for a quarter-final berth are Guatemala, currently in third place in Group C with three points.

In other games Monday, Paraguay shut out Thailand 8-0 and Russia beat the Solomon Islands 31-2, breaking the World Cup records for most goals and biggest margin of victory in the event
