Herald TribuneBrazil beats Iran 1-0 in second roundThe Associated PressOctober 11, 2008RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil: Brazil beat Iran 1-0 Saturday in the first game of the second round of the Futsal World Cup with a goal from defender Schumacher in the third minute.
It was Brazil's fifth consecutive victory, and by far its toughest after having won its first round games 21-0, 12-1, 7-0 and 9-0.
The Brazilians created several scoring opportunities but were constantly thwarted by impressive saves by Iran goalkeeper Mostafa Nazari.
The second round pits eight nations in two groups of four, with the top two advancing to the semifinals. Spain, Paraguay, Argentina and Russia form Group F, while Brazil Italy, Iran and Ukraine are in Group E.
Also in Group E, Forte and Nora scored two goals each to lead Italy to a 4-0 victory over Ukraine.
Nora opened the scoring in the 26th minute and Forte made it 2-0 in the 31st minute. Nora scored again two minutes later followed by Forte in the 39th minute.
In Group F, defending champion Spain downed Russia 5-2.
Spain's Alvaro picked up the first goal in the 12th minute. Five minutes later Russia's Prudnikov made it 1-1, and teammate Maevskiy put Russia ahead in the 26th minute.
In the 30th minute, Spain's Torras scored the equalizer, and two minutes later Daniel scored with a penalty shot. J. Rodrigues slammed the ball into the net in the 38th minute and L. Amado scored Spain's fifth goal in the 39th.
Also in Group F, Paraguay and Argentina tied 3-3.
Paraguay took an early lead with goals scored by Alcaraz in the first minute and Villalba in the 13th. Argentina narrowed the gap through Corazza in the 16th. Gonzalez scored the equalizer in the 33rd minute and Lucuix put the Argentines ahead in the 34th minute.
With just two minutes left in the game Alcaraz saved Paraguay from defeat by scoring his team's third goal.
