Women kick off play at new futsal field

October 13, 2008

Saturday night was monumental for the Guam Football Association and four of the teams in the 2008 GFA Bud Light Women's Futsal League when they inaugurated the newly developed outdoor futsal courts at GFA complex in Harmon.

GFA's futsal courts were ready since summer but the recently concluded men's league opted to play indoors at the Guam sports complex gym. The women, on the other hand, opted to think outside of the box, deciding to play during the rainy season and make special arrangements in case games get rained out, said Cheri Stewart in press release.

"The games played (Saturday) night went without a hitch as mother nature decided to be forgiving and not give rain," said Stewart.

And the futsal, which is a fast growing sport in many countries, and very popular in most Asian countries, turned out to have a different feel on the new courts. The open area around the court and the fence make the playing area feel much more roomy. Also, according to Stewart, the court is wider and longer than the indoor court, which affected game play and strategy.

In the opening game on Saturday, Arisa Recella, Tanya Blas-Cruz and Aubre Salas scored to lead Hyundai to a 3-2 victory over the Crushers Orange. Jonimonay Tedpahogo netted both scores for the Crushers.

Guahan.com 1, DeYo 1: Charisse Bolabola scored for Guahan.com, while Asha Robles scored for DeYo.

Yesterday's games at the Guam sports complex:

Paintco Strykers 10, Bombers 0: Aubrey Posadas scored four times and Koharu Minato, Tiffany Camacho and Deanna Garcia each added two.

Crushers Black 6, Tigers 2: The Crushers were led by Kristin Thompson's hat trick. Anjelica Perez added two goals and Heather Thompson another for the Crushers.

Alexy Barbe and Joice Tevid were the scorers for the Tigers.

Dick Pacific Masters 4, Guam Shipyard 2: Four separate player struck for the Masters -- Rhoda Bamba, Catherine Beck, Therese Diaz and Yvonne San Nicolas.

Deidre Weakley and Jenalynn Pepito scored for Shipyard.
