Wauchope Hastings GazetteTwo compete in Futsal titles16/10/2008TWO of Wauchope’s premier athletes took to the courts of Melbourne at the national 2008 School Futsal championships.
Matt Hensley and Sam Cass played against some of the best Futsal players in the country at Dandenong as part of the northern NSW representative side.
The Wauchope High School students played a total of eight games over the five days but were cursed with bad luck from the start.
It didn’t help that the northern NSW players hadn't met before the tournament and didn’t get a chance to train before the carnival.
Their side – due to various circumstances – could only field 6 players and the one person interchange was not enough.
The fast pace of the five-a-side game relies on interchanges and it showed with the northern NSW side going down in all of their eight encounters.
But coming up against the best in Australia was reward in itself according to Cass.
“The standard of play down there was so high,” he said.
“There were some freakish players and some great contests.
“It was a good chance to play against the best and futsal is pretty popular in Dandenong,” he said.
Cass playing at pivot in the backs still got a chance to go forward scoring five goals while Hensley kicked 13 putting in a good showing for national selection.
The yet to be selected national side will get the chance to play teams from the greatest futsal nation in the world – Brazil.
Cass has another year left at high school and will get another shot at the titles next year.
He will continue playing in the local Futsal competition as well as the Wauchope representative side.
The high scoring game is gaining popularity in Australia with Wauchope’s own league going from strength to strength.
Cass says more people are always welcome to the sport which plays at the Wauchope Sports Stadium.
“It’s a great game and involves more fast paced skill work than soccer because it’s on a much smaller field,” he said.
“It’s great for improving your skills and its fun.
“It’s proving more and more popular for the girls as well,” he said.
