Adriano Foglia put Italy 1-0 up in the sixth minute, but Konstantin Dushkevich equalized for Russia in the 25th minute.
However, Assis scored with time just about up.
On Sunday, Brazil plays Spain in the final.
Brazil and Spain are the only nations to have won the World Cup in futsal, which is played in two 20-minute periods on a surface about the size of a basketball court.
Brazil won the first three editions and the Spaniards the last two. The Brazilians finished third at the last World Cup after losing in the semifinals to the Spaniards.
