GUAM Women Futsal League Update

Saturday night (Oct. 11th) was a monumental moment for GFA and Women's League as four teams from the Women's League (Hyundai, Crushers Orange, Guahan.com and DeYo) had the honours to play on the newly developed futsal courts at GFA for the first time. The players, parents and fans were excited about what it would be like to play on the new court.

Guam Football Association has built this futsal court to provide venue to promote the futsal. Futsal is becoming a fast growing sport in most countries but it is a very popular sport in some Asian Countries. The GFA Futsal courts have been ready since summer but the Men's League opted to play indoor at the Guam Sports Complex due to it being the rainy season. The Women's League opted to think outside of the box of how to utilize the GFA Futsal Court during the rainy season. Arrangement has been made in the event the games scheduled at the GFA Futsal courts get rained out. If all goes well, the season should finish before the Holiday season.

Much excitement to witness the first game to get kicked off to a good start. Both teams provided a good challenge while testing out the court. There were mixed feelings as the court looked small to some but very large to others. Its all an illusion as there's a fence surrounding the court while the Guam Sports Complex has a more open surrounding to make it feel roomy. In true actuality, the court is wider and longer. It became apparent when the game started and realizing that a set strategy from goal clearance could not make it to the other end of the goal. In Guam Sports Complex, certain goalkeepers can throw the ball far and high enough to reach the other goals and create opportunities for strikers to flick the ball into the goal with a header. At the new futsal complex, the goalies were not able to reach far enough so strategy had to change.

In a nutshell, the games played last night went without a hitch as mother nature decided to be forgiving and not give rain. It was going to be the only thing that would stop the game from going forward but a back up plans were in place in the event that it did rain.
