Here come the Girls!

Friday, 10 October 2008

The latest Futsal league to begin in the capital kicked off last Saturday at Palmerstown Community Centre. It features seven women’s teams, the majority of who play in the DWSL. With the completion of the women’s summer season, many teams are out of activity until next year but this league provides the perfect opportunity for the girls to stay fit and enjoy a new exciting game that has been growing rapidly throughout Ireland.

Last weeks fixtures produced some excellent performances but overall produced a positive response from the participants who enthused about their involvement in the league. The opportunity to play in the comfortable indoor environment in the small sided game which offers players plenty of contact with the ball went down a treat.

League administrator Vicky Fisher said:
“ The response to the league when it was first proposed was fantastic. Within 24 hours, seven teams had signed up to play realising that this was a great opportunity to continue playing football during the winter. After playing the game for the first time myself last week and having spoken to girls from the other teams about the game, I’ve no doubt that this league will go from strength to strength. It’s quick, it’s fast, it keeps you on your toes and you get plenty of involvement in the heart of the action. I can’t recommend it highly enough for girls who are looking to continue playing during winter. Already word of mouth is spreading the good news and other teams have been in contact with a view to participating in the next edition”

National Futsal coordinator Derek O’Neill said:
“It’s great to see the first ever women’s Futsal league beginning. It’s a landmark league and great credit must go to Vicky for her enthusiasm and drive in making it happen. I’m sure the girls will enjoy playing this popular game and it’ll be great for sharpening their skills for when they return to the 11 a side game.”

The league runs for eight weeks with the top four teams competing in a finals day ensuring competition will be keen right until the final weekends.
