SD Futsal's Most Improved Players

By Amberly Richardson

Wednesday, November 5, 2008

Every week, players ages 5 to 18 hit the courts at Alliant University for San Diego Futsal’s Sunday night clinics. Kids from 5-11 are up first in the early session; athletes 12-18 play a bit later. All the participants are sharpening their skills, but XK San Diego highlights two players, one from each session, who have gone above and beyond to get the most out of the experience.

Early Session
Six-year-old Kylie Stirling has six months of Futsal experience under her tennis shoes and has embraced the process with open arms. Stirling takes what she learns at Alliant University and brings it to her Surf GU-7 team, where she is learning it’s all in the skills and speed. Here is what she has to say about her Futsal experience:

What’s your favorite thing about Futsal?
It's just like soccer, only better. It is a lot faster and it really makes you get better.

What do you think is your biggest area of improvement in Futsal?
The warm-up drills have made my skills a lot better. And when we play games I'm using better skills to score goals.

Why do you think you have improved?
Futsal is fast and you get the ball a lot. You have to move your feet really fast and pass the ball really fast.

Late Session
Eleven-year-old Eren Esener is a two-year veteran of Fusal who enjoys everything about taking his game to the court, because what he learns inside can be applied to the grass. Esener shares how he has fine-tuned his game and how it’s been all fun and games:

What’s your favorite thing about Futsal?
I love everything about Futsal -- how fast the game is, how much ball control it requires, how hard you can play in such a short time, and how you can practice and improve your moves and skills.

What do you think is your biggest area of improvement?
I am much faster now, much more confident and do my tricks even in my soccer games.

Why do you think you have improved?
Practice makes perfect. Going to Futsal is just like going to a practice but it's only fun. You're free to do all your crazy tricks and moves without the pressure of a league game. You have fun every minute of playing Futsal. You don't even realize how much you're improving and how it's affecting your whole game of soccer.
