PHIL EDWARDS14/11/2008TWO Launceston Christian School futsal teams will represent the State at a national tournament in Queensland this weekend.
The grade 6 boys' and girls' teams were presented with special futsal tops for the Australasian Champion of Champions Futsal tournament at a school assembly on Wednesday.
The teams left yesterday for the host location of Runaway Bay.
"It's the first time the school has sent teams away to play in such a tournament," boys' team manager and prep-1 teacher Peta Narkowicz said. "The two teams will play in the under-12 age group and are really excited about playing against teams from other states."
Futsal is a relatively new sport to Tasmania, similar to indoor soccer but with modified rules.
Mrs Narkowicz said all the teams taking part in the competition would be staying at an Olympic-standard super sports facility in Runaway Bay.
Two parents, Tony Demeijer and Trish Nes will coach the teams with Fiona Demeijer the girls' team manager. "We are going for the experience to represent our school and our State and will be the only Christian school invited - but it will be fun," Mrs Narkowicz said.
She said fund-raising efforts by parents plus support from the school's parents and friends organisation helped cover the costs of airfares, accommodation and team uniforms.
